MARGAO: The Higher Secondary School Teachers Association (HISTAG) urged the government to revise the criteria for career advancement structure and progression for higher secondary school teachers in Goa.
On Friday, a delegation led by Babaji Sawant, President of HISTAG, called on Chief Minister of Goa Pramod Sawant, to discuss matters concerning teachers in Higher Secondary Schools and the student community.

They also assured the Education Minister of their complete support for initiatives aimed at improving the education system in Goa and benefiting students, and also their willingness to collaborate with the government in implementing positive measures that enhance educational standards and outcomes.
As informed by Sawant, currently, the career advancement structure for teachers provides progression at two stages: after completion of 12 years and 24 years of service, contingent upon completing necessary in-service training. This differs from the structure for other government employees and those in the Goa Civil Service, who are entitled to career advancement at three stages: after 10, 20, and 30 years of service.
“Teachers teaching at the Higher Secondary School stage are stagnating after 24 years of teaching, regardless of the additional years they dedicate to their service, with no further advancement in career progression. Hardly one or two teachers get promoted to higher posts,” he stated.
Sawant also informed that the matter relating to earned leave entitled to teachers was discussed, and there was a request to increase it from 10 to 12 days per year at all stages, bringing parity across the board.
CM, in his reply, stated that he will examine the matter accordingly. The delegation presented a memorandum to the Chief Minister on this occasion, underscoring their concerns and requests regarding career advancement structures and earned leave entitlements for teachers in Goa’s higher secondary schools.
The Chief Minister has assured HISTAG that he will positively look into the matter and work towards fulfilling their demands in consultation with the relevant officials.
