MARGAO: Water supply to Salcete and Mormugao talukas was disrupted this evening after the Selaulim water pipeline ruptured at Raia on Saturday.

Senior PWD officials rushed to the spot after the Pre-Stressed Concrete Pipeline was damaged by the ongoing work of laying a parallel MS line in the area.

PWD Executive engineer, S Paranjapee told Herald that PWD officials are assessing the situation, whether the damage is only limited to the joints or a pipe. “If the damage is restricted to the joint, then the same can be repaired tonight and water supply can be restored to Salcete and Mormugao by Sunday evening”, he said.

He, however, said that if the pipe is damaged, then it would involve work on replacing the pipe and welding. In his scenario, the work would be complete by Sunday evening and water supply to Salcete and Mormugao would be restored only on Monday, he said.

Replying to a question, Paranjapee said that the pipeline was damaged at around 4.30 pm when a crane working on laying the MS line under JICA project hit the existing pipeline. “Water supply through the pipeline has been stopped at Sanguem. We will come to know the exact position of the damaged line after water in the line flows out”, he said, adding that the PWD has mobilized both manpower and machinery to restore water supply.
