Fibre boat manufacturing factory gutted in Cuncolim

Around 40 fibre boats reduced to ashes; Loss estimated at Rs 2 crore

CUNCOLIM: In a major fire incident at Cuncolim Industrial Estate, a fibre boat manufacturing factory was gutted on Thursday afternoon.
Though the exact loss is not known, but looking at the disaster it is estimated that the loss would be more than Rs 2 crore.
It took six hours for the fire brigade to control the fire.
Sources said that many fibre boats brought for repair were kept outside the factory at an open place belonging to Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). Someone might have set fire to dry grass which engulfed the boats kept outside the factory premises. The fire later spread to the factory, said sources.
Around forty fibre boats kept outside the premises were reduced to ash. Besides, two newly manufactured fibre boats and four fibre boats which were in manufacturing process were also got burnt.
Sources said the fire personnel would have put out the fire much early had the IDC installed fire hydrants been functioning.
Meanwhile, information obtained under RTI has revealed that many industrial units are not equipped with fire hydrants.
Many factories are also functioning without the NOC from fire and emergency services.
