Retaining Wall Collapse in Margao: Damodar Chamber Hit After Warnings Ignored for 2 Years

A large section of the retaining wall of Alta Monte Society collapsed on Damodar Chamber Society yesterday, raising serious concerns about long-standing structural risks and administrative inaction.

According to residents, this is not the first time such an incident has occurred. Two years ago, a smaller portion of the same retaining wall had collapsed. Despite repeated warnings and formal complaints to the disaster management authorities, no corrective action was taken, said Mario Pinto Almeida, a concerned resident.

“We informed the disaster management team two years back,” Almeida stated. “But unfortunately, no steps were taken to prevent further damage.”

The latest collapse caused structural damage to parts of Damodar Chamber Society, although no injuries have been reported so far. Residents are now demanding urgent intervention to prevent any further incidents, especially with the monsoon season approaching.

Authorities have been urged to inspect the site immediately and ensure safety measures are implemented without further delay. An official response from the disaster management department is still awaited.
