PANJIM: The State Transport Authority has imposed a one year moratorium on issuing fresh licences for rent-a-cab and rent-a-bike, which are essentially self-drive vehicles, amidst concern that their increasing numbers eat into tourist taxi operators’ business.
Director of Transport Arun Dessai said that a detailed discussion on the number of rented vehicles was held, due to protests from taxi and auto rickshaw operators, and it was decided to impose a one year moratorium on all those vehicles that are registered under the rent-a-bike scheme.

“There are strong protests from taxi and auto rickshaw operators who pointed out that their business is badly affected,” Dessai said, adding, “this is not a self-employment scheme.
