MARGAO: In a bid to address the growing problem of coconut waste, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has inaugurated a new coconut shredding machine at the Sonsoddo dump yard. The machine, launched by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat on Wednesday, aims to provide a sustainable solution to manage the increasing volume of coconut shells and other related waste in the town.

This is the second waste management machine installed at Sonsoddo, complementing an earlier machine used for shredding coconut leaves. The new machine, costing approximately Rs 13 lakh and approved by the Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA), can process up to 500 kg of coconut waste per hour.
The installation of this machine comes after the MMC struggled to manage tender coconut waste and domestic coconut shell disposal, The mounting waste problem had even led the MMC to ban tender coconut sellers in Margao due to the absence of proper disposal mechanisms.
The introduction of the coconut shredding machine is expected to
reduce the scattered mounds of coconut shells across the town, generate useful byproducts, and provide a sustainable avenue to handle domestic and commercial coconut waste.
Speaking at the inauguration, civic officials expressed hope that the shredding machine would significantly ease the burden of waste disposal in Margao while promoting efficient waste processing practices. With no dedicated space for coconut waste earlier, this facility offers a structured solution for both households and commercial establishments.
