MAPUSA: Residents of Camarcazana, Mapusa have raised a major concern as they are witnessing a decrease in water level in all their wells in the area. They said the water has receded by almost two feet while some wells and natural springs have completely dried.
Residents of ward number 8 said that ongoing work of the sewerage treatment plant which is located at Camarcazana as well as pumping of water through bore-well for the National Games has caused this fall in water level. A similar situation had arisen in April 2023, where the water level had dropped after the trial run of the Sewage Treatment Plant was commenced.

Residents pointed out that if this is the situation of wells in the winter, one could imagine that the situation in the summer will be dire.
“Some wells in the area have dried up, while the water level of some wells has decreased. Last time when the issue was raised, we were assured that chambers and pipelines from residential sites will be blocked but till date it has not been done. They have continued to pump out water. The situation has worsened now. There is no proper water supply through the PWD and in such a situation if the wells go dry or water level drops then what are we supposed to do?” John Lobo a local said.
Lobo further pointed out that the National Games are going on at Peddem and there are around three bore wells through which water is being pumped to the stadium. “We don’t know what we are supposed to do. We request the councillor and concerned authorities to look into the matter at the earliest and take measures to restore the water level,” Lobo said.
Residents also pointed out that there are water suppliers who fill their tankers with water from the wells in their area and supply it to other places but if wells go dry, they themselves will not have water to use while the natural spring which had never dried in past years has also dried, a local said.
“There is no water to drink or even wash clothes. We are forced to buy packaged water for consumption”, a senior woman citizen stated.
