CALANGUTE: The indiscriminate slaughter of chickens in public spaces and stores is entirely illegal, according to Dr Karlette Ann Fernandes, a well-known veterinarian.

Speaking on ‘Animal Rights in India’ at MOG, Pilerne, Fernandes highlighted that many corner chicken shops in Goa are operating unlawfully. “None of these shops are legal as per regulations. Animal slaughter must occur in licensed slaughterhouses,” she said.
She also addressed the rising issue of stray dogs, particularly dog bites, some of which have been fatal. She linked the presence of strays to poor garbage management and stressed that pet behaviour is shaped by their environment. “When animals are confined too long, they build up frustration. Much of the conflict comes from inadequate socialisation,” she explained, urging potential pet owners to assess if they can provide a suitable environment for their pets.
On community dogs, Fernandes pointed out that the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, protect them, ensuring they have the right to stay in their birthplace. “Relocating dogs just because you don’t like them is illegal,” she said.
She also condemned the use of bulls in fights, noting an alarming trend where contraband drugs are used to increase their aggression. “These animals should never be used for fighting,” Fernandes stated.
