‘Ageing Gracefully’ at Pilar
PANJIM: ‘Ageing Gracefully’, a spiritual programme for senior citizens (58 years and above) will be held at Pilar Animation Centre, from January 25 (at 5 pm) to January 27 (4 pm). The programme includes: Tips for healthy and happy living, spiritual inputs and exercises, breathing and relaxation techniques, wellness and fitness exercises, fun games and entertainment. Siolim murder accused surrenders
CALANGUTE: Rupesh Salgaonkar, the prime accused in the alleged murder of a 50-year-old man from Dando-Siolim, surrendered before Anjuna Police on Wednesday. It may be recalled that Arun Toraskar was allegedly killed over some temple issue at Dando late Saturday night. Acting on the compliant, Anjuna Police had arrested 10 persons in this connection. The main accused, Salgaonkar, surrendered before police and he was later arrested in the connection. Police informed that Salgaonkar was produced before JMFC Mapusa and remanded to seven days judicial custody. Anjuna Police is investigating the case. It is reliably learnt that a local politician played a major role in the surrender of the accused. Meanwhile, the prime accused in the murder of a 19-year old girl at the Assagao plateau is yet to be arrested by Anjuna Police and a hunt is in progress to trace the culprit.
Cancel ‘Grape Escapade’: Hindu group
PANJIM: The right wing Hindu Janjagruti Samiti has called for cancellation of wine festival ‘Grape Escapade’, scheduled from January 24-27, claiming that organization of such an event will further tarnish image of Goa as a land of “wine, women and drugs”. It needs to be cancelled to protect Bharatiya culture and save public money, HJS said. “The organization of such an event is very much detrimental to the already tarnished image of Goa as a land of ‘wine, women and drugs’ and will further reinforce this false image of Goa at the International level,” HJS coordinator Dr Manoj Solanki said. Dr Solanki said that when State and its people are economically affected with closure of mining industry, spending of Rs 86 lakhs on the festival is really surprising and shows government’s insensitivity of the people’s problems. “The BJP government is supposed to be protector and propagator of Bharatiya (Indian) Culture and recently BJP’s mentor, RSS, had described western culture as being responsible for rapes in the country. Wine is not part of Bharatiya culture and promotion of such an event is very much against the propaganda of the party,” the HJS said.
SANGUEM: Sanguem Mamlatdar Bhat has appealed to parents not to permit their minor children to drive vehicles to until they get valid driving licenses. “A majority of accidents are caused by young riders who lack common sense and basics of safe driving,” said Bhat while addressing the concluding ceremony of the road-safety week organised by Sanguem Jaycees at Sanguem. Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai was the chief guest for the concluding ceremony, while Zone President Sachin Kuttikar, Zone Vice President Kapil Sinai Borkar and Zone Director Malik Kuknoor were also present at the function. Phaldessai also urged vehicle riders to drive cautiously without risking the lives of other people using the road. On the occasion, Sanguem Jaycees felicitated trainer at Sambhari Driving School Kassim Hussai Khan, Sanguem ASI Manguesh Datta Naik and motorcycle pilot Manguesh Datta Naik for their is services to the society for last 32 years.
Prizes were also distributed to the winners of the contest on road safety organised by Sanguem Jaycees to school children.
Chinchinim heist: Cops intensify probe
MARGAO: The Cuncolim police on Wednesday rounded up more than 25 persons in the armed robbery committed by three persons in Chinchinim branch of Kamakshi Forex money exchange on Tuesday noon.
Cuncolim PI Raju Raut Dessai when contacted stated that the police are on the right track in their investigations into the case. He refused to give any further details in the case.
It may be recalled that three armed robbers entered the branch and attacked a lone employee and escaped with a booty of Rs 9.5 lakh consisting of an amount of Rs 5 lakh in Indian currency, besides $5000 US dollars and 3000 pounds and two laptops.
Meet to sensitize teachers
MARGAO: In the wake of the recent sexual assault incident at a school in Vasco, the South Goa police administration have convened a meeting with teachers and heads of various educational institutions from Salcete taluka at the Ravindra Bhavan on January 24 at 4.30 pm.
The meeting according to Margao Sub-divisional Police officer, DySP Mohan Naik, has been called to sensitize them on various aspects to ensure safety of students. DIG Mishra along with other top brass of police and administration officers would be addressing the gathering.
Search for Pokod: Houses raided
MARGAO: Colva PI Nilesh Rane raided two houses at Pedda, Benaulim, in the wee hours of Tuesday in search of accused Basilio alias Pokod Ratos who escaped from police custody on January 17 night.
Police said the raid was conducted upon information that the absconding accused was staying in one of the houses.
It may be recalled that Pokod was arrested along with Xavier D’Costa of Navelim by the Colva police on charge of murdering a Chennai tourist Madan G on January 13 at a shack on Colva beach. Pokod had given a slip to the Colva police while being escorted from the police station to the Margao police lock-up.
Quepem rape: Bail plea orders today
MARGAO: The South Goa district & sessions judge Vijay Pol heard arguments on the bail pleas filed by Pramod Arjun Velip and Sanjay Gopal Devidas, who were arrested by Quepem police in the case of alleged rape and blackmailing a married woman from Quepem. Orders in the case have been reserved for January 24.
Public prosecutor Subhash Dessai argued that the gravity of the offence should be taken into consideration and that there is no substantial change in factual situation after rejection of previous anticipatory bail on January 18. He further stated that if the two accuse are released on bail they will cause physical harm to the victim and her family.
Advocate Rajiv Gomes who represented both the accused stated that the duo has been in custody since January 18.
One arrested for cheating
MARGAO: On a complaint filed by one Nitish Gurav, Rumdamol, Davorlim, of cheating, police arrested Mhadev alias Vishal Molu Naik Dessai of Cuncolim .
Police said accused Dessai who was released on bail by the court allegedly cheated the complainant and three others for an amount of Rs 2.33 lakh. Gurav in his complaint has alleged that the accuse collected the said amount of Rs 2.33 lakh in November last year from Paresh Chavan of Aquem Baixo, Margao, Narendra Naik of Rumdamol and Ramnath Varik of Murida Fatorda with a promise that he would arrange jobs for them in Afghanistan but till date he had failed to keep the promise or return the amount collected. PSI Diago Gracias is investigating.
