PONDA: A complaint has been filed with Ponda Police by Curti Sarpanch Abhijeet Gaude, urging an investigation into the alleged burial of an unidentified body at the crematorium in Deep Nagar, Curti, without proper identification or legal procedures. The clandestine burial reportedly occurred on November 1, between 4 and 4.30 pm. The Sarpanch emphasised the need for urgency in addressing the matter to uphold the law.

This incident has reignited concerns around the management of the crematorium land, which was acquired 17 years ago for use by all communities, including Hindu, Muslim, and Christian. Despite repeated requests from the villagers, demarcation for specific community areas has yet to be completed.
Locals previously raised similar issues, alleging that several burials took place without official records and generated unaccounted revenue for the Panchayat. Following these allegations, the Panchayat installed a gate to prevent unauthorised rites; however, the gate now remains unlocked, allowing for unrestricted access.
At a recent press briefing, social worker Sandeep Parkar claimed that while over 600 burials have taken place, only 65 are recorded with the Panchayat. He welcomed the Panchayat’s decision to file a police complaint and called for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability.
