MARGAO: The ongoing issue of stray dogs in Salcete, along with beaches has been causing significant concern among locals and tourists alike.

Residents and visitors continue to voice their frustrations, especially in light of recent incidents where unsuspecting individuals, including foreign nationals, were attacked by aggressive packs of stray dogs. These incidents have left both locals and tourists feeling vulnerable, with many demanding urgent intervention from the authorities.
While the local community expresses concern, some positive steps have been taken by the Cavelossim Village Panchayat and ‘We for Fatorda’, who have been proactive in tackling the issue without relying solely on the government.
Despite their efforts, stray dogs can still be seen not only on the beaches, but also along roadsides, creating fear among pedestrians and motorists. In fact, these dogs are reported to have attacked motorcyclists, leading to accidents and injuries.
“The stray dog menace continues to pose a significant risk to public safety. However, the authorities have yet to develop an action plan to address the problem effectively,” said Ratna Raikar, a resident of Margao.
Ratna said, “Even senior citizens are finding it difficult to go for walks due to the several stray dogs roaming on the streets.”
Rohan Fernandes, a Benaulim resident, shared similar concerns, particularly about the effect on tourists.
“Tourists are facing hardships because the stray dogs on the beaches are suddenly attacking them. Even the locals are afraid of being attacked,” he said.
In response to this growing concern, ‘We for Fatorda’, an initiative led by the Fatorda MLA, recently conducted a canine sterilisation camp in Fatorda. This camp is aimed at managing the stray dog population more effectively, using animal birth control as a responsible solution.
The authorities have urged cooperation with animal welfare organisations to develop a sustainable, long-term approach to the problem.
MLA Vijai Sardesai said, “The failure of the Margao municipality to tackle this problem has led us to take the initiative.”
The situation remains serious, and residents continue to hope for greater collaboration between local authorities, animal welfare groups, and the public to find a lasting solution.
