In a significant move to clear public spaces and tackle health hazards in the urban areas of Mar gao and Fatorda, the Dis trict Magistrate of South Goa, Egna Cleetus, IAS, has issued a formal proclama tion addressing the issue of abandoned and unclaimed vehicles lying within the jurisdiction of the Traffic Cell, Margao. The proclamation, pub lished by the Office of the Collector and District Mag istrate, South Goa, follows a report submitted by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic), highlight ing a long list of vehicles that have been left unat tended in various locations of Margao and Fatorda. These vehicles, many of which are in deteriorated condition, have become breeding grounds for mos quitoes, raising serious concerns about the spread of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and ma laria. Authorities have also pointed out that these ve hicles pose a risk to public safety, block footpaths and roads, cause inconvenience to pedestrians and motor ists, and could potentially be used for unlawful or criminal activities. Invoking powers under Section 26 of the Indian Police Act, 1861, the Dis trict Magistrate has called upon any individuals with a claim or ownership in terest in these vehicles to come forward with valid documentary evidence within six months from the date of the notice. “If no objections or claims are received within the stipulated time,” the proclamation warns, “the vehicles will be forfeited in favour of the State Gov ernment and will be dis posed of via public auction or through any other mode approved by the district administration. No claims will be entertained after that.” The list of the identified vehicles has been made available at the Office of the Deputy Collector and Sub-Divisional Magis trate-I, Margao, and is open for public inspection. This move is seen as part of the district’s broader strategy to improve urban cleanliness, reduce public health risks, and enhance the safety and mobility of residents, especially in high-traffic areas like Margao city centre and Fatorda. Citizens are urged to verify the list and come forward promptly if they believe any of the listed ve hicles belong to them.
