Nitin Gadkari says India set to become global leader in biofuels

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday said India is poised to become a global leader in biofuels. He made the remarks while laying the foundation stone and dedicating three National Highway projects in Puducherry. Gadkari highlighted that India’s electric vehicle industry has grown to ₹22 lakh crore from ₹14 lakh crore in 2014.

The minister dedicated the 38-km four-lane Puducherry-Poondiyankuppam section of NH-32, built at a cost of ₹1,588 crore. He also laid the foundation for a 4-km elevated corridor on NH-32 with an outlay of ₹436 crore and improvement works for a 14-km stretch of East Coast Road costing ₹25 crore.

Gadkari emphasised sustainable road construction, noting that 18 lakh tonnes of municipal waste have been used in roads so far. He also encouraged tractor manufacturers to introduce flex-fuel, ethanol, CNG, and electric engines, stating that electric tractors can save farmers up to ₹1.5 lakh annually. Improved infrastructure and fuel efficiency have reduced logistics costs from 16% to 10%, with projections to reach 9%.
