Raila Odinga, the former Prime Minister of Kenya, passed away at the age of 80 while receiving treatment at an Ayurvedic hospital in Koothattukulam, Kerala. The veteran leader suffered a cardiac arrest during his morning walk within the hospital premises and was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, where medical efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at 9:52 am on Wednesday.
Odinga had arrived in India earlier in October for Ayurvedic treatment at the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre, following a mild stroke he had suffered in Kenya. Accompanied by his daughter, sister, personal doctor, and security personnel, he had shown signs of recovery and had started walking short distances again during his treatment.
Born on January 7, 1945, Odinga was a towering presence in Kenyan politics and a strong proponent of multiparty democracy. He served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and was known for his repeated bids for the presidency, contesting five times between 1997 and 2022. Despite never winning the presidency, he remained a significant opposition leader and played a crucial role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape.
