Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Goa President Adv. Amit Palekar has voiced strong concerns over widespread hafta (extortion) practices allegedly affecting business owners across Goa’s coastal belt. According to Palekar, illegal collections have surged to around ₹3–₹4 lakh per month from each establishment. Representing several hotel and restaurant owners, he revealed that many have approached him, saying it’s becoming impossible to sustain their operations under such pressure. “As their lawyer, I first heard their grievances. But as a politician, I felt it was my duty to bring this issue to light,” he said. Palekar has urged authorities, especially Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, to take immediate action and dismantle this illegal network. He warned that the ongoing extortion not only harms the business community but also severely tarnishes Goa’s tourism image and economic stability.
