The Davorlim Dicarpale village panchayat has expressed deep con cern over what it described as a disturbing rise in drug abuse among the youth in the area. The issue, which has been troubling locals for several months, was formally raised after mul tiple reports suggested that groups of youth were frequently gathering at se cluded spots to engage in suspected drug consump tion. Sarpanch Menino Co laco confirmed that the panchayat has observed a pattern of suspicious activi ties, particularly during late evening and night hours. “There are a few areas where groups of youth have been seen engaging in al leged drug consumption. We have already reported this matter to the police and have requested strict monitoring and vigilance,” he said. According to Colaco, the panchayat has provided the police with details of several vulnerable loca tions where such gather ings are believed to occur regularly. Residents have also voiced anxiety over the issue, pointing out that the increasing presence of drugs not only threat ens the well-being of the youth but also the overall peace and safety of the village. Locals fear that if immediate action is not taken, the problem could grow beyond control, leading to criminal activ ities, behavioural issues, and long-term social con sequences. The panchayat has urged law-enforcement authori ties to intensify patrolling, especially in identified hotspots that have become habitual meeting points for suspected drug users. Colaco emphasised the need for coordinated action involving the police, local leaders, and community members to prevent the vil lage from becoming a hub for narcotic activities. “We have highlighted specific areas where sus picious activities are tak ing place during the night. The police need to keep a close watch, and we ex pect strict action against those involved,” Colaco re iterated. He added that awareness programmes for parents and youth may also be nec essary to address the root causes of the problem. The panchayat plans to follow up with the police to ensure that preventive measures are implemented without delay. With grow ing concern among resi dents, village leaders hope that swift action will help curb the influence of drugs and safeguard the future of the younger generation.
