The Ministry of External Affairs on Friday broke its silence on a viral video featuring Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya, reiterating that the government remains committed to bringing the two fugitives back to India. The video, posted by IPL founder Lalit Modi, shows him celebrating Vijay Mallya’s 70th birthday at a private gathering in London, where Modi is heard calling them “the biggest fugitives”, prompting laughter from Mallya.
The footage, reportedly filmed at Modi’s residence in Belgrave Square, has drawn widespread criticism online for its provocative tone. Responding to questions, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said extradition cases often involve lengthy and complex legal procedures spanning multiple countries. He emphasised that India continues to coordinate with the nations concerned and that the extradition process is underway. Lalit Modi has been out of India since 2010, while Vijay Mallya left the country in 2016, with both facing long-pending legal action.
