Winter in Goa can be harsh during the evenings and nights, and one has to look their best, whether in layers, beanies, socks, or whatever else may be needed. For the not-so-harsh winter mornings of Goa, generally cotton or garments made of light-weight fabric are preferred. In Goa, it is not wool or velvet that are pivotal for winter fashion; rather, it is knit work, which is often handmade.

“Generally, hoodies are an all-time favourite, and for late nights, jerkins are there, but this year, handmade knitted products are ruling,” fashion designer Jaya Mitra, based in Porvorim, shared. Alongside the cute and functional knitted clothing, woollen crochet is popular.
Carrying 2025 winter staples to 2026?
Trending staples for the winter season include the usuals like hoodies and cardigans, but with a twist — available in long and chunky styles. Oversized cardigans and sweaters continue to rule wardrobes, as they remain among the most comfortable and warm clothing items. Knit tops and knitwear are gaining popularity, with layered knit tops emerging as a favourite pattern.
Fashion designer Philu Martins shared, “At my boutique, this time we are experimenting with newer blend fabrics such as handloom cotton blends with wool knit, recycled wool and eco knit yarns, bamboo knit and performance knits, along with light faux-fur trims limited to shawls. This also includes layered knit tops such as ribbed thermal tees.”
Winter fashion that breaks the basics
Maximalism may be slow, but it is making a comeback. Even in winters, adding a pop of colour or a statement piece enhances an outfit. Apparel expert Clynne Morgan Jorge from Panjim said, “Add unique layers, statement jackets, accessories, bold colours, interesting cuts, or mix fabrics instead of plain styles to make the outfit look more attractive.”
She added that winter fashion suitable for both cool mornings and colder nights includes cotton shirts, linen tops, light sweaters, shrugs, or thin jackets that are easy to add in the evening and remove during the day. Handmade sweaters, scarves and beanies are also overriding other options to elevate outfits.
Winter fashion, the Goan way
Being covered in layers does not have to be jading when a Goan vibe is brought into winter garments. Bright colours, boho chic floral patterns and playful textures allow room for experimentation. “We don’t need heavy woollens here, but silky velvet and rough felt fabrics can add spice and style,” said Jaya.
Philu explained that Goan-inspired winter wear can feature sea ripple line-work on scarves, sunset gradients on knitwear, minimal beach silhouettes embroidered as accents, along with local flora and festive motifs such as cashew blossoms and hibiscus. Cultural prints include Konkani script motifs like Saibinn Goenkar and Amchem Sommor, while beach and festive fusion themes draw from night cafés, oceans and bonfires. Materials commonly used include knit blends, merino, bamboo and soft wool blends that feel cosy without overheating.
Winter fashion in Goa is not about bundling up blindly. It is about intentional layering, expression and comfort. Knitwear, lightweight fabrics and carefully chosen accents help navigate cool nights and mild mornings while staying distinctly stylish — warm, lively and effortlessly unique.
