A serious public health concern has surfaced at the Sulabh International–maintained Pay & Use toilet facility at the KTC Bus Stand in Margao, with an allegedly unsafe soak pit posing risks to commuters and nearby residents.
According to GOACAN (Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network), the soak pit located behind the toilet complex is effectively open, though superficially “covered up,” creating what has been described as a potential health hazard in a high-footfall public area. The condition of the pit has raised fears of contamination, foul odour, and the spread of disease, especially given the constant movement of passengers at the busy bus stand.

Terming the situation “shocking but true,” GOACAN has called for urgent intervention by the district administration. The organisation has urged the Directorate of Transport, Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL), and the Health Officer of Urban Health Centre (UHC) Margao to take immediate corrective action.
GOACAN warned that continued inaction could lead to serious public health consequences and stressed the need for swift inspection, proper sealing of the soak pit, and accountability of agencies responsible for maintenance. Authorities have been urged to act promptly to prevent the issue from escalating into a larger health crisis.
