Young Veterinarian Killed in Hippopotamus Attack at Shivamogga Zoo, Karnataka Orders Probe

In a tragic incident in Shivamogga district, a 27-year-old veterinarian lost her life after being attacked by a hippopotamus at a zoo late Thursday night.

Sameeksha Reddy, a resident of Bengaluru, was working on a contract basis at the Tavarekoppa Lion and Safari Zoo. According to reports, she had completed a routine check-up on a Sun Conure bird around 10:30 pm before proceeding to examine a pregnant hippopotamus at approximately 11:45 pm.

While using a thermal camera to assess the animal’s condition, she was suddenly attacked by the hippopotamus, leading to critical injuries.

Reddy was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery. However, she succumbed to her injuries on Friday morning during treatment.

Describing the incident as deeply unfortunate, Eshwar Khandre expressed condolences and assured support to the bereaved family. “Every life is precious. May God give strength to the family to bear this loss,” he said, adding that officials have been directed to provide compensation as per government norms.

Authorities are expected to review safety protocols at the zoo following the incident.
