Ten months after the devastating crash of Air India flight AI 171 in Ahmedabad, families of the victims are still searching for answers. Around 30 grieving families have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging authorities to release data from the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder, commonly known as the black box.
The Boeing 787-8 aircraft, bound for London, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, killing 241 of the 242 people onboard and 19 others on the ground when it struck a medical college hostel complex and burst into flames.
Families who gathered in Ahmedabad said access to the black box data is essential to understand what led to the tragedy. They have raised concerns about possible technical faults and want clarity on whether the crash could have been prevented. While they have requested public disclosure, they have also asked that the information at least be shared privately if full release is not possible.
Copies of their appeal were also sent to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
The preliminary report was submitted in July 2025, with the final findings expected by June 2026.
