Trump holds 40-minute call with Modi; discusses keeping Strait of Hormuz open

Underlining the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure, US President Donald Trump spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday in a 40-minute phone call, marking their first conversation since the US and Iran announced a ceasefire last week.

Following the call, Prime Minister Modi shared details on X, stating that he received the call from “my friend President Donald Trump.” He noted that both leaders reviewed significant progress in bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

The leaders also discussed the evolving situation in West Asia, with both sides stressing the importance of ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and secure. The Prime Minister tagged @POTUS and @realDonaldTrump in his post.

This conversation comes shortly after the April 8 ceasefire, and was preceded by another call between the two leaders on March 24. That earlier discussion also took place in the backdrop of heightened tensions following US and Israel’s strikes on Iran in February. On both occasions, Trump initiated the calls, and the Strait of Hormuz remained a central point of discussion.

On March 24, Trump had paused his threat of striking Iran’s energy infrastructure and opened channels for behind-the-scenes talks with Tehran, during which he also highlighted the importance of keeping the key waterway open.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, carrying nearly 20 per cent of global oil and gas trade. Any disruption is seen as having wide-ranging implications for global energy prices and supply chains, including in India.
