Flipkart, owned by Walmart, is preparing to enter India’s fast-growing entertainment ticketing segment by offering movie and concert bookings, according to sources familiar with the matter. The move comes as consumer spending on live entertainment rises sharply across the country.
India’s live events industry has seen strong momentum over the past year, driven by large-scale concerts, international tours, and major sporting events such as those organized under the Indian Premier League. These events are drawing massive crowds, reflecting increasing disposable incomes and wider smartphone penetration.
Sources indicate Flipkart is targeting a May launch, positioning itself against established players like BookMyShow and Zomato’s District platform. The company is also reportedly planning to pilot a food delivery service around the same time, although timelines may shift.
This expansion comes as Flipkart strengthens its business ahead of a potential IPO in India. The firm has already relocated its holding company, reshuffled leadership, and reinforced key verticals such as Myntra.
However, both ticketing and food delivery are highly competitive and low-margin sectors dominated by entrenched players like Zomato and Swiggy. Despite strong demand, profitability remains a challenge due to years of aggressive discounting and heavy investments.
