Chennai Super Kings have suffered a massive setback in IPL 2026, with Ayush Mhatre ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury. The young batter sustained the injury during a clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18 while attempting a quick double during the powerplay.
Mhatre had emerged as one of CSK’s standout performers this season, scoring 201 runs in six matches at a remarkable strike rate of 177.87. His absence adds to the team’s growing injury concerns, with players like Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis also ruled out.

In an official statement, CSK confirmed that Mhatre will require 6–12 weeks of rehabilitation, effectively ending his IPL campaign. His injury has raised questions, especially after the decision to continue batting despite visible discomfort. Former cricketers, including Ravichandran Ashwin, criticised the move, suggesting it may have worsened the situation.
Interestingly, Mhatre had joined CSK as a replacement for captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and quickly transformed the team’s top order with his aggressive approach. With over 240 runs in seven matches, he was one of the few positives in an otherwise inconsistent season.
His absence leaves a major gap, and CSK now face a tough challenge finding a suitable replacement. With playoff hopes hanging by a thread, the team’s campaign has taken another significant hit.
