Bethany Convent High School, Salcete, has earned national recognition for its efforts in promoting a tobacco-free lifestyle among students, receiving a prestigious award under the “School Challenge: Towards Tobacco-Free Generation” initiative.
The school was selected from among nearly 17,000 schools that participated across India in the campaign organised by the Government of India’s Ministry of Education and the Department of School Education and Literacy. The award was presented at a ceremony held at Novotel, New Delhi, on May 29, 2026.
Headmistress Sr. Sandra Fernandes and Nodal Teacher Mrs. Elizabeth Godinho received the honour on behalf of the school. The award included a trophy and a cash prize of ₹25,000 in recognition of the institution’s sustained efforts to create awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco.
The achievement reflects the school’s commitment to fostering a healthier and more responsible generation. Throughout the year, Bethany Convent High School conducted a series of awareness programmes and educational activities aimed at discouraging tobacco use and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices among students and the wider community.
School authorities expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education and the Department of School Education and Literacy for recognising their efforts in advancing the vision of a tobacco-free society.
The school also acknowledged the support of Samagra Shiksha, Government of Goa, for encouraging and recognising its initiatives under the Tobacco-Free Generation programme. Special thanks were extended to Manoj B. Sawaikar, State Project Director; Jyoti Sinari, State Project Coordinator and Nodal Officer for Tobacco Control; and Smiti Dessai, Technical Assistance (MIS), for their guidance and support.
With the national recognition serving as a milestone, Bethany Convent High School reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its mission of promoting awareness, healthy habits, and a tobacco-free future for generations to come.
