The Goa Electricity Department has opposed the intervention of a small group of consumers in the ongoing suo motu hearing concerning smart meters, stating that only three to four individuals have sought to participate despite the state having approximately 7.5 lakh electricity consumers.

Executive Engineer Kashinath Shetye informed that the department has objected to the intervention applications, arguing that the limited number of participants does not reflect widespread consumer concerns regarding the smart meter rollout.
According to the department, no major issues related to smart meters have been reported across Goa. Officials maintain that the implementation process has largely proceeded without significant complaints from electricity consumers.
The matter is currently being examined in a suo motu hearing, where issues related to smart meters and consumer concerns are under consideration. The Electricity Department has reiterated its position that the technology is functioning as intended and that there is no evidence of large-scale problems affecting consumers.
The hearing forms part of ongoing proceedings aimed at reviewing matters connected to the installation and operation of smart meters in the state.
The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for June 26, when the matter is expected to come up for further consideration.
