At least four patients lost their lives after a massive fire broke out at a private hospital in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district in the early hours of Thursday. The blaze reportedly started in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) located on the fifth floor of Prasad Hospital, triggering a major rescue operation.
According to officials, the fire department received an emergency call at around 3:55 am and immediately dispatched firefighting teams to the scene. Rescue personnel worked swiftly to evacuate patients trapped inside the affected ward.

Approximately 20 patients were rescued from the ICU, while the remaining patients admitted to the hospital were shifted to nearby medical facilities for treatment and safety. Authorities fear that the death toll could rise as information about the condition of the evacuated patients continues to emerge.
“We rescued 15 to 20 patients from the ICU, of which two died on the spot. The other patients have been moved to nearby hospitals. We do not have an update on their health condition,” said Ram Niwas Pandey, a fire department official in Muzaffarpur.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and an investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident. Officials are also examining whether all necessary fire safety measures were in place at the hospital.
The tragedy has once again raised concerns about fire safety compliance in healthcare institutions, particularly in critical care units where patients are often unable to evacuate on their own during emergencies.
