PANJIM: Four years after flash floods hit Canacona taluka, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has demanded the immediate implementation of recommendations made by the 7-member government appointed committee to study the catastrophe which occurred in Canacona on October 2, 2009.
The committee headed by former director of National Institute of Oceanography Dr Satish Shetye had recommended that the areas which were highly prone to flooding due to intense rainfall should be identified and a disaster management plan should for these areas.
Addressing a press conference, NCP spokesman said that BJP-led government has failed to implementations the committee’s suggestions, which had clearly said that the 14 areas prone to mudslides identified by the committee in 2010 should be mapped and site-specific disaster management plan should be put in place.
NCP spokesman alleged ‘government is waiting for another similar disaster in Canacona’.
NCP also condemned the government decision of diverting funds collected for the rehabilitation of the Canacona flood-affected people to the Uttarakhand Relief Fund. The State Cabinet while taking the decision had said that the fund was unutilized by the previous government and since it was marked for rehabilitation, it cannot be used for any developmental work.
