A group of engineering students in Goa has submitted a representation to MLA Vijay Sardesai, urging the state government to revise the academic calendar in the interest of student health and well-being.
In their representation, the students expressed concern over the conduct of classes, workshops, and practical sessions during the peak summer month of May, stating that the extreme heat adversely affects both their physical and mental health.
The students pointed out that engineering courses involve extensive workshop and laboratory sessions, where they are required to wear protective gear and work for prolonged periods, resulting in significant exposure to high temperatures and uncomfortable conditions.
They also noted that, unlike engineering institutions in many other states, colleges in Goa offer limited vacation time before the commencement of the new academic year, leaving students with inadequate time for rest and preparation.
The representation has requested the government to ensure that semester examinations conclude by mid-May and that students are provided with at least a month-long vacation before the start of the next academic session.
Additionally, the students have called upon the Directorate of Technical Education and Goa University to undertake reforms in academic planning, taking student welfare into account while also improving opportunities for internships, skill development, and campus placements.
The students expressed hope that the government would consider their concerns and introduce a more balanced academic schedule that promotes both academic excellence and student well-being.
