Ravindra Jadeja’s absence from India’s ODI squad for the upcoming England series has raised fresh questions about his future in the format and whether the veteran all-rounder remains part of the team’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a full-strength squad for the three-match ODI series against England, but Jadeja was once again missing. The 37-year-old had also been left out of the squad for the Afghanistan series, with Axar Patel continuing to be preferred as India’s first-choice left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder.

Unlike previous squad announcements, the BCCI did not provide any explanation for Jadeja’s omission, leading to speculation that the selectors may have started looking beyond the experienced all-rounder.
According to sources, Axar Patel currently enjoys a clear edge in India’s white-ball plans. Washington Sundar’s emergence as a reliable spin-bowling all-rounder has further intensified competition for places, while Kuldeep Yadav remains India’s premier specialist spinner.
Since the 2023 ODI World Cup final, Jadeja has featured in only 13 ODIs. During that period, he has scored 149 runs and picked up 12 wickets. While those numbers remain respectable, they pale in comparison to Axar’s contributions. Axar has accumulated 377 runs and claimed 16 wickets in 17 matches, offering greater value as a lower-order batter.
The conditions expected in South Africa during the 2027 World Cup could also work against Jadeja. India are likely to favour additional fast bowlers rather than carrying multiple spin-bowling all-rounders. With Axar providing left-arm spin and batting depth, and Sundar covering the off-spin role, there appears to be little room for Jadeja in the current combination.
Age may also be a significant factor. Jadeja will be approaching 39 by the time the World Cup arrives, and selectors are increasingly focused on building a squad capable of serving India beyond the next ICC event.
While the door may not be completely closed, Jadeja’s latest omission suggests he faces an uphill battle to reclaim his place. Unless injuries or exceptional performances alter the equation, India’s ODI setup appears to be moving in a different direction as preparations for the 2027 World Cup gather pace.
