Construction of the Martyrs’ Memorial at Patradevi has been completed on a war footing, and Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant has announced that it will be inaugurated between August 15 and August 20.
Inauguration Timeline Announced
The memorial, located near the Maharashtra–Goa border in Torxem (Pernem), holds historical significance as the site where 31 satyagrahis were killed by Portuguese soldiers in 1955 while attempting to enter Goa. Every year, around 1,000 people, including freedom fighters and members of the public, gather there on Independence Day to pay homage.
Call for Parity in Liberation Day Celebrations
Suryakant Toraskar, former Zilla Panchayat member and former Sarpanch of Torse, has demanded that Goa Liberation Day be celebrated with the same spirit and manner as Independence Day. Goa Liberation Day is observed annually on December 19 to commemorate the state’s liberation from Portuguese rule in 1961 through Operation Vijay.
