Ajinkya Rahane is all set to begin a new chapter in his cricket career, this time with a microphone in hand.
The former India captain will make his Test commentary debut for Sony Sports Network during India’s upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka, with the first Test scheduled to begin on August 15 in Galle.

Sony Sports welcomed Rahane to its commentary team through a social media post, describing his move as a new home for his cricketing expertise and welcoming him to its “Extraaa Innings” panel.
The new role comes only weeks after Rahane announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on July 30, bringing an end to an international career that lasted more than a decade.
A Career Built on Test Cricket
Rahane represented India in 85 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 T20Is. His Test career produced 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46, including 12 centuries.
Although he played across all three formats, Rahane became particularly known for his performances in Test cricket, especially in overseas conditions.
His calm temperament and ability to handle pressure also made him a key member of India’s Test setup for several years.
One of the defining moments of his career came during India’s tour of Australia in 2020-21.
Remembered for Historic Australia Series
Rahane took over as India’s stand-in captain after the team suffered a dramatic defeat in the opening Test in Adelaide, where India were bowled out for just 36.
Under his leadership, India bounced back strongly and won the four-match series 2-1.
Rahane played a central role in the turnaround, scoring a crucial century in the Melbourne Test as India levelled the series.
The victory at the Gabba in Brisbane eventually sealed one of the most memorable Test series wins in Indian cricket history.
Rahane finished his international career with six Test matches as captain, remaining unbeaten in that role.
Retirement Brings New Opportunities
Rahane’s retirement from professional cricket does not mean he is stepping away from the sport.
The former India batter has also signed with Amsterdam Flames as a marquee player for the inaugural European T20 Premier League. The tournament is scheduled to begin on August 26 and run until September 20.
His involvement in the league will give him an opportunity to remain connected with competitive cricket even after ending his international career.
The commentary role, meanwhile, will allow Rahane to use his experience from nearly 18 years of first-class and international cricket to offer insights from a player’s perspective.

Rahane’s transition to commentary marks a significant change in his relationship with the game.
Having played against some of the world’s best bowlers and led India during one of its most challenging overseas series, he brings extensive first-hand experience to the commentary box.
His calm personality and measured approach could also translate well into his new role.
