India’s hopes of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final have taken a hit after the second Test against Sri Lanka ended in a draw at the SSC in Colombo. India won the two-match series 1-0, but the result means they collected only 16 points from the Sri Lanka tour instead of the maximum 24.
India are now fifth in the WTC standings with 68 points and a points percentage (PCT) of 51.52%. With seven Tests still remaining, India face a difficult road ahead, with two Tests against New Zealand away from home followed by a five-Test home series against Australia.

India’s Road to the WTC Final
India have seven Tests left in the current WTC cycle: two in New Zealand and five at home against Australia. Their qualification hopes will depend heavily on how many of those matches they can win.
A perfect seven wins from seven would lift India to 70.37% PCT and put them in a strong position for a top-two finish. Six wins and one defeat would take them close to 65%, keeping them firmly in contention.
However, India have very little room for error. A poor result in New Zealand would increase the pressure on the Australia series, where India will need to collect a substantial number of points.
The equation becomes particularly challenging because Australia currently lead the standings with an impressive 80% PCT. They also have 12 Tests remaining, including five against India.
Australia Hold the Advantage
Australia remain the strongest team in the qualification race. They have won eight of their 10 Tests and are comfortably placed at the top of the table.
Their remaining schedule includes three Tests against South Africa away, four against New Zealand at home and five against India away. Six wins and a draw from those 12 matches would take Australia beyond the 65% mark, while seven wins and a draw would push them close to 70%.
With such a strong starting position, Australia are likely to remain one of the leading contenders for the final.
South Africa and New Zealand in Strong Positions
South Africa occupy second place with a 75% PCT despite having played only four matches. They have eight of their remaining 10 Tests at home, although their schedule includes challenging series against Australia and England.
New Zealand are third at 72.22%. They have 10 Tests remaining, including home matches against India and Sri Lanka and difficult away assignments against Pakistan and Australia.
If New Zealand can win both their remaining home series and add two away victories, they could move close to the 65% mark.
Bangladesh Emerging as a Surprise Contender
Bangladesh are currently fourth with a 55.56% PCT and are enjoying their strongest WTC campaign across the four editions.
They have six Tests remaining, four of them at home. Their schedule includes two Tests against South Africa away, followed by home series against the West Indies and England.
With fewer matches remaining than most other contenders, every Bangladesh result could have a major impact on their qualification hopes. Four wins and two draws would take them to 66.67%, while four wins and two defeats would leave them at 61.11%.
Sri Lanka Face a Steep Climb
The draw in Colombo provided Sri Lanka with some relief, but their qualification prospects remain slim. They have just 33.33% PCT after six Tests.
Sri Lanka have six Tests remaining: two away against Pakistan, two away against New Zealand and two at home against South Africa.
Even six wins from six would take them only to 66.67%, meaning they would need several other results to go their way.
India Cannot Afford Another Slip
The Colombo draw has changed the complexion of India’s WTC campaign. They remain firmly in the race, but their margin for error has become extremely small.
Winning the five-Test Australia series at home will be crucial, while the two Tests in New Zealand could determine whether India enter that series with their qualification hopes intact.
With Australia, South Africa and New Zealand currently holding much stronger positions, India now need a major winning run to guarantee their place in the WTC final.
