PONDA: The gau rakshaks on Monday threatened to come on the road in protest against Ponda Police if cognizable offence is not registered against the two alleged accused, who were caught red-handed, for illegally transporting six stolen cattle for slaughtering purpose.

The gau rakshaks were furious because despite the alleged accused being caught red-handed, the police released them by registering a non cognizable offence. They demand that the police register the offence under Section 8 of Goa Animal Preservation Act 1995.
They also filed a complaint to the South Goa Superintendent of Police to direct the Ponda Police to register a cognizable offence into the matter and arrest the alleged accused and case be filed in the court to prevent such practices in the future.
Rajhiv Jha, secretary of Rashtriya Yuva Hindu Vahini, who filed a complaint on behalf of the gau rakshaks, demanded that the Ponda Police should registered a case against the two persons namely driver of the vehicle Usman Khan and Malik Bepari, who were caught red-handed at Bethora while transporting six cows in Tata Ace Vehicle without legal documents and handed over to Ponda Police.
In his complaint to South Goa SP and Ponda Police, Jha alleged that the accused had stolen cattle from various places and were transporting for slaughtering purpose to earn money by selling the meat illegally. However, the Ponda Police without conducting proper inquiry instead of arresting them and registering a cognizable offence released them merely by registering a non cognizable offence.
Jha said that two days have passed for the incident and the police have failed to arrest and register a cognizable offence or a FIR into the case. The gau rakshaks from across Goa will hold protest on the Ponda streets anytime if their demand is not met.
According to the gau rakshaks, the alleged accused persons are also having previous cases registered at Bicholim, Valpoi and Ponda for the same offence, by Govansha Raksha Abhiyan on earlier occasions but were are not punished despite repeated offence.
