CANACONA: The Jyestha Nagrik Manch and Swabhimani Jagrut Kankonkar took a ‘Chalo Railway Station’ morcha demanding a stop for long-distance trains at Canacona, on Thursday.
The morcha started from Nagarsem and the parade was stopped near the railway station by the police.
Canacona Mamlatdar Manoj Korgaonkar, Quepem Sub Divisional DySP Gurudas Kadam, Canacona PI Chandrakant Gawas were present at the site to maintain law and order.
The agitated locals asked the Mamlatdar to call the railway officials who then called Divisional Officer Sunil Narkar.
Janardan Bhandari, Vikas Bhagat, Councillor Dhiraj Naik Gaonkar and other locals bombarded the railway officials with questions and threatened to hold a ‘railway roko’ protest if the Canacona Railway Station is not declared a stop for the long-distance trains before January 5. Railway officials then assured the locals of sending their appeal to the Railway Board and following-up with them.
The Canacona Railway Station was a regular stop for trains such as Netravati Express, Mangala Express, Ernakulam Express, Matsyagandha Express, Gandhidham-Nagercoil Express and many more before the halt at the station was cancelled during the pandemic. However, the halt has not been resumed ever since which is causing inconvenience to the locals from South Goa.
