CANACONA: The highly decomposed carcass of an 18-mtr long whale was washed ashore at Galgibaga beach on Saturday.
Local fishermen noticed the carcass floating close to the shore along the southern part of the beach, near the mouth of River Galgibaga, early Friday morning, before it was disposed off by forest officials.
The carcass was decomposed to such an extent that the internal organs and bones were washed ashore at different part of the Galgibaga beach.
Workers engaged by Forest (wildlife) toiled for four hours before they succeeded in burying the carcass in the beach at Galgibaga.
When contacted, Forests (Wildlife) RFO Kashinath Pingulekar, who was closely monitoring the activity, said he was in favour of preserving the skeletal structure of the carcass, as they have high ornamental value.
Asked to comment on the death of the whale, Pingulekar replied: “It’s difficult to ascertain, but it must have died in the high sea. Considering the stage of decomposition, the whale must have died at least 15 days ago.”
