Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai emerged as the kingmaker at the end of the Margao Municipal elections where 11 of his 12 candidates under the banner of Fatorda Forward won while the BJP’s Margao Development Panel took a huge beating in Fatorda and Margao as they secured only 4 seats. Out of 25 seats, the Model Margao led by Digambar Kamat and Fatorda Forward managed to secure 17 seats while one independent candidate, Kutubuddin Bhagewadi of ward 25, offered support to their panel bringing their alliance to 18. The remaining three independents are Damodar Naik who defeated Digmabar Kamat backed sitting councillor Rosy Pereira from Margao, Arthur D’Silva who defeated his fellow councillor Damodar Shirodkar, backed by Kamat and BJP rebel Suchita Malkarnekar who defeated former chairperson Sushila Naik also backed by Kamat.
Out of the 11 councillors who re-contested this time 7 have been sent back by the voters namely Rosy Pereira, BJP backed Raju Naik, Housing Board independent husband wife duo Sadanand Naik and Babita Naik, Kamat backed Damu Shirodkar, Sushila Naik, and Dhananjay Mayenkar.
Several divisions have adversely affected the BJP’s Margao Development Front panel with Fatorda candidates Sujay Lotlikar losing by 21 votes, Vavita Raikar losing by 91 votes, Gregorio Dias losing by 164 and Durgadas Prabhu losing by 82 votes.
