PANJIM: Enviromentalists from Goa have strongly opposed the construction of Dunikhol Dam by neighbouring Maharashtra as it would pose threat for Kalne river in the North Goa.
According to environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar, the Maharashtra government is constructing an irrigation dam near Hanuman mountain at Fukeri in Dodamarg taluka of Maharashtra which, he says, will affect the Kalne River and impact the forest cover and wildlife.

Kerkar said that the Maharashtra government has not given any information about the dam to the people residing at Fukeri in Dodamarg taluka even as there are reports that the dam is built for irrigation purpose. He has suspected that the dam is being built to meet the requirement of the industrial estate.
After the matter was brought to the notice of the Goa government, the latter is learnt to have written to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest and Climate Change expressing serious apprehensions over the construction of the dam as it would adversely affect the ecology.
