MARGAO: Governor P S Shreedharan Pillai announced that he would soon publish a book on the heritage trees of Goa, as well as a book on the islands of Goa, during his visit to Salcete and Quepem as part of ‘Goa Saimik Daiz Yatra’ on Monday.
Speaking to reporters
at Margao, he said that the Raj Bhavan has already done a study on the heritage trees of Goa.
“I am planning to visit all the islands of Goa and
another book will be
published on the same,” said Pillai.
Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardesai welcomed the Governor when he arrived at Holy Spirit Church, Margao.
Others present were Fr Amandio Valadares, Parish Priest of Holy Spirit Church, Esmeralda Mendes e Fernandes, Headmistress of Holy Spirit School, and Fabrica members.
After offering prayers at the church, the Governor paid a visit to the Maddi (Sterculia Foetida) tree, which is locally known as Nagin tree, within the
campus of the Holy Spirit Church, and was apprised
of the history of the tree
by noted historian
Sanjeev Sardesai and the Parish Priest.
Upon his arrival in Quepem, the Governor was welcomed by local MLA Altone D’Costa, Former Deputy Chief Minister
Chandrakant Kavlekar and others. The Governor offered prayers at Shree Laxmi Mandir.
Later, the Governor offered prayers at the giant Baobab tree located in the old police station area, which is believed to be one of the oldest trees.
The Governor said he was keen to learn about the rich eco-cultural traditions
behind these sacred trees and other ancient trees in the State.
Later, Pillai visited Shree Muddeshwar Sateri Devasthan, Kusmane, Quepem and offered prayers.
He also offered prayers at the heritage Peepal tree in the temple locality, and said, “One earth, one family and one future will pave the path for global welfare.”
He added that the ideology is derived from the ‘bharatiya’ concept Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.
