MARGAO: An attempt was made to burgle the Monte Hill Chapel Our Lady of Piety, at Margao, on Wednesday night. This is the fifth such attempt on the chapel in the recent past.
According to police, the burglar tried to enter the chapel by removing the roof tiles, but since the roof had a false ceiling, the culprit fell to the ground after the false ceiling broke owing to his weight. The incident occurred at 8.30 pm on Wednesday.
The chaplain Fr Simao Diniz was suffered bruises when he tried to capture the culprit. Later, Fr Diniz lodged a complaint at the Fatorda Police station and an offence has been booked under Sec 380 of IPC.
Fr Diniz said that two FIRs had been registered at the police station — one of which was relating to robbery of several valuable items. He also revealed that incident of putting water in the fuel tank of his vehicle and attempts to do the same to the vehicles of his visitors have been made in the past.
Fr Diniz said that he was not sure that all the five incidents are connected. “But now the entire campus of Monte Chapel will be installed with CCTV,” he said.
