BELGAUM: Commuters from north Goa travelling to Khanapur and beyond via Chorla will be inconvenienced, as the road has been blocked for major repairs of an old bridge near Khanapur along the Jat-Jamboti state highway linking Goa.
Commuters will have to travel an additional distance of about 40 kms via Peeranwadi to reach Khanapur and further, as the PWD has taken up repairs of an old bridge near Vadgaon Cross along the Khanapur-Goa road via Chorla, which is expected to go on for at least a couple of days.
According to PWD, this is one of the four bridges that were constructed by the British. Though the construction quality was superior, the bridge that had developed huge potholes due to plying of heavily loaded sand vehicles from Khanapur to Goa and steel vehicles from Goa to Khanapur needs urgent reconstruction.
However, this has put commuters from either side to a lot of inconvenience as the vehicles to and from Goa will now have to proceed via Waghawade-Peeranwadi which is time consuming and strenuous journey. The work has also affected bus services between Goa and Khanapur, putting commuters on either side to inconvenience. Though authorities have assured to complete the work as early as possible, looking at the past record, uncertainty prevails and it seems that commuters will have to wait for a longer time to reach Khanapur directly, informed sources.
Meanwhile, demand to ban illegal transportation of sand and steel on the road is on the rise. Commuters are demanding for a total ban on over loaded and heavy vehicles on the road.
