Rs 300 crore earmarked to improve health infrastructure

PANJIM: The Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) is gearing up to revamp the health infrastructure in the state by creating facilities of over Rs 300 crore. The Goa Medical College, the dental college and health centres will get new buildings and equipment with upgraded facilities.
The plan is proposed to be executed over the next five years and includes new infrastructure at the primary, secondary and tertiary segments in the health sector.
The Goa Medical College at Bambolim will be the biggest beneficiary with a new OPD building costing Rs 30 crore, a modular operation theatre costing Rs 10 crore, two lecture halls of 150 seat capacity worth Rs 14.57 crore, and auditorium like classrooms with 375 seating capacity worth Rs 15 crore.
In addition, a new girls hostel with a 100 bed capacity costing Rs 10.24 crore, extension of the RMO hostel costing Rs 7.5 crore is also on the GSIDC list of works.
A hostel for post graduates costing Rs 5 crore is also planned at Mandur.
The GSIDC has also decided to work on a plan to facilitate pedestrian and traffic management within the Goa Medical College and to improve and revamp the services for water, sewerage and electricity.
The neighbouring dental college phase II is also on the corporation’s agenda and a Rs 51 crore plan that will provide lecture halls, wards, OPDs is being drawn up.
The new TB hospital at the GMC complex is expected to cost Rs 45 crore.
An official from the GSIDC revealed that there are plans for new health centres at Mandur, Tuem, Cacora and Shiroda and consultants have already been appointed to draw up the plans.
A health centre at Cansaulim and Sanguem are also in the offing each with a price tag of between Rs 10 to Rs 20 crore.
It is learnt that a state health training institute is planned at the old Asilo building which would cost the people’s exchequer Rs 8 crore.
Presently the GSIDC is the process of handing over the community health centre at Sanquelim costing Rs 13 crore and upgraded primary health centre at Bicholim costing Rs 12 crore.
The upgraded Tisk-Usgao hospital is also being handed over to the Health Department.
The new morgue at Monte Hill Margao is slated to cost Rs 2 crore while the forensic block at GMC is on the verge of completion.
The community health centre at Valpoi is also in the final stage of completion at the cost of Rs 23.25 crore.
“The corporation is also undertaking routine maintenance works at GMC and other community and primary health centres,” said this official and this will cost Rs 2 to Rs 3 crore. As far as the new district hospital in South Goa is concerned, the corporation is still awaiting finalisation of plans which are expected shortly.
