Many years ago the British introduced death penalty for certain convicted criminals in our country. Till this day, death penalty is given to the rarest of the rare cases and some other extremely serious cases.
In Britain, they abolished the death penalty. But in India, the practice is continued even today. There must be a re-look on death penalty in our country.
Most religions believe that God or the Supreme Being is the author of life and so no human being has a right to take away the life of another person. Yet there is bestiality on this planet every day. There are many reasons which lead a person to criminal activities.
Some persons having pathological problems and compulsive behaviour pattern may tend to get involved in criminal activities. Certain surrounding like prolonged harassment by dominant groups, deprivation of basic amenities, and denial of right to freedom, lack of proper education may lead some to get involved in criminal activities.
There are many other reasons as well. People involved in prison ministry often believe that many of the hardcore criminals given a chance to change, and by being compassionate towards them, could become better human beings. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth will never be the solution for the progressing humanity.
Therefore the convicted criminals who are proven to be a serious threat to society or who are involved in committing the rarest of the rare crimes be given life imprisonment instead of sending them to gallows.
