VASCO: Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and handed over a memorandum, asking him to intervene and resume the Varunapuri to MPT flyover work.
Referring to the report ‘Varunapuri to MPT flyover work hits roadblock’ published by Herald in its November 21 edition, Almeida reiterated that the number of accidents in Vasco will decrease once the flyover work is completed.
Addressing media persons on Monday, Almeida said he had taken cognisance of the issue and had thus met the CM. It may be recalled that recently, a high level joint meeting was held in Vasco to discuss the traffic issues following the fatal accident of tiatrist Marcelino de Betim.
Almeida added that he emphasised that the  the non-payment issue between PWD and National Highways Authority should be sorted.
He said the CM had assured him that he would convene a meeting with all the stakeholders involved in the project and that he will sort out the prevailing issues.
Chandrakant Gawas,  pointed out that for the past six months, no work had been done on the project due to the non release of payment.  He added that the public utility project, costing Rs 543 crore, should have been completed within the stipulated three-year-period.
MMC Chairperson, Nandadeep Raut referred to the recent number of accidents and how people are blaming the municipality, while pointing to the incomplete  flyover project as the major issue.
“We are taking measures to clear encroachments on roads, enforce systematized parking, managing stray cattle. However, once this flyover work is completed, a lot of heavy vehicles will ply from this route, which will then ease the traffic congestion and reduce the number of accidents and also help with the parking issue,” Raut opined.
