margao: The much-maligned Director and former chairperson of the Visionaries Cooperative Credit Society, Gracy Vaz, has broken her silence and said that there has been not one fraud during her tenure of the board. She added that she has got no political influence and is being made a soft target.

Her statements come against the backdrop of the protests by the Society’s depositors, which are getting bigger by the day.
The protestors have named and alleged that Gracy had committed frauds when it came to the bank’s operations.
However, responding to this, Gracy has said she is the one who had asked the auditor to conduct an audit of the society, which had initiated action against the society’s frauds.
“I was doing an honorable service for that society. We cannot just close and go without any solution” said Gracy.
She added that it is not just the depositor’s money, but even her own money and that of her family was stuck in the Society. “I even helped some of the customers by taking a loan on my name. Even we had approached some people to help our society and the talk was going on. I had put in a lot of effort to save the money of the people,” Gracy reiterated.
“But today my name is defamed in the society. I am having a lot of problems due to my honest services to society. I do not have any political influence,” a dejected Gracy added.
She further stated that she is being harassed and that the protests had even reached her house by way of a big morcha.
“Only the person who has defrauded the bank knows what he has done. If he has guilt and conscience, he will come to the fore and return the funds of the public,” said Gracy.
It may be recalled that the Society, which began in 1991 has gone through rough times and closed its branches like those in Loutolim, Colva, Majorda, Curtorim, and Ramnagari.
After the fraud was alleged and an audit confirmed the same, the Administration of Coop Soc has put the society under certain directions and had appointed an administrator. The depositors have since been holding protests in various locations asking for justice.
