A Big Billion disappointment

Although Flipkart claimed to have got a billion hits for its special sales offer on Monday, millions of buyers felt cheated on its discounts and took to the social media to express their frustration

Flipkart, one of India’s largest
e-retailer, claimed to have sold products worth Rs 600 crores for its ‘A Big
Billion Day’ offer on Monday but millions of buyers alleged that the prices
quoted were higher and that the portal crashed during the day. Consumers also
alleged that the prices printed in its advertisements in newspapers on many
electronic products and consumer goods did not match with the rates mentioned
on the portal. As the online traffic surged for the day-long special sales that
began in the morning, the website crashed late afternoon, resulting in outrage
against the e-retailer in the social media for the website being inaccessible
for hours together and increasing prices before offering discounts.

In promos, the company said it would offer
multiple items at Re 1, smartphones at 30 per cent discount, laptops from Rs
15,000 onwards and 50 per cent discount on fashion, perfumes and toys.

On Tuesday, the Flipkart team swung into
damage control mode and issued apology letters from co-founders Sachin and
Binny Bansal to its several users. However, it was much late after many Goans
who had an unpleasant experience using the portal, had posted their experiences
on social media websites on Monday.
