An app a day keeps the doctor away?

Technology at one’s fingertips has seen a spurt in the belief that you no longer need a gym membership or a personal trainer, but could instead use a few apps that can help manage fitness levels and ensure a healthy lifestyle

The alarm goes off, you hop out of bed and the next thing
you know, you are on your way to your workout. No, not necessarily the gym,
just your workout. It could be in your living room, basement or backyard, all
from your phone or portable device.

Some believe that the hardest part when it comes to hitting
the gym for a solid workout is building up a routine and having a set of goals
to strive for. Others say in contrast that, once you get there, there is still
the issue of making sure you’re getting the most out of your time at the gym
with the right weights and exercises. In 2015, we have access to plenty of
extremely powerful devices and the world of fitness at our beck and call.
Hence, that motivation is more attainable than ever before, thanks to the
dozens of apps that push one to and keep one focused on getting fitter than
ever before.

Vernon Xavier of Workoutz Fitness Studio in Margao points of
that this might not always be as easy as it sounds. “Motivation is the key, and
sometimes this isn’t always attainable from home. For instance, one may begin
this regimen with the noblest of intentions, yet, after a while, with no one to
push your limits, a little bit of complacency is bound to set in. This is why
the environment that the gym provides along with the trainers alongside to push
you is optimum.”

Yet, there is an increase in trending subjects in the online
sphere that believe that having a personal trainer as well as a fancy gym
membership isn’t necessarily a prerequisite when it comes to getting in shape.
These beliefs are echoed by sentiments that feel that with the repository of
knowledge that can be recalled through the usage of just a few apps, which are
either free or have a one-time purchase cost, one can just as easily ensure
that they stay fit from home.

Anil Malkarnekar from Dona Paula has featured heavily on
Goa’s landscape on the fitness front. A trainer of fitness trainers themselves,
he shares his views on the subject, saying, “There are certain aspects that one
needs to always bear in mind. One must infallibly ensure that all health risks
are accounted for. This is generally better accounted for at a gym. In my
experience, gyms also provide that little extra incentive, whether it is socialising
with co-fitness aficionados to ensuring that there is someone present to
provide that much needed push. However, for those with discipline as well as
the ability to keep their health parameters in check, there is no harm done in
working out using technology.”

All this taken into account, I suppose the end question is,
do you have what it takes to keep up the workout from home? If yes, perhaps
home workouts are the thing for you. If not, perhaps it’s time to return to the
taskmasters at your disposal at your neighbourhood gym.
