Cram for that exam

The academic year is now at its business end and students are feeling the heat of their upcoming trials at the hands of the year-end examinations. Café speaks to a few students and parents and finds out how they tackle the exam pressure

Over the years, from the time our parents have put their
pens to paper, to the tablet and laptop being the need of the hour, exam
pressure is an inevitable rite of passage for all young adults. As March slowly
gives way to April, ‘tis the season to be frantic, as all kinds of pressures
and woes set in.

It’s that time when the topic of conversation revolves
around examinations and all they entail. Sanchez Fernandes of Navelim shares
his experiences, saying, “Somehow, especially with parents, all conversation
revolves around academics, with everything coming a distant second. My father
and I are die-hard Arsenal fans. Yet, come this time of year, our normal
weekend discussions of whether Giroud will perform or not go out the window.
All that matters is the score on my economics paper.”

And when it comes to ‘the establishment’, the matters are
just as trying. At the end of the day, all parents want to see their kids
excel, yet at times bridging the communication gap is rather intense. “We have
a huge issue understanding our children sometimes. Modern technology has sped
up the evolution of everything. I recall once telling my daughter off for being
on her tablet for too long when she should have been studying. Only to have her
smirk, turn the tablet around and show me the notes she had been going through
on it,” he says in good humour.

So whether parent or offspring, this exam season, brace
yourself and focus. But most importantly, remember to communicate and ease the
pressure. Young Goa speaks below:
