British film-maker Leslie Udwin should be congratulated for coming out with a great documentary titled “India’s Daughter” based on the Delhi gang-rape of 2012 through BBC and for rightly exposing the mentality of our Indian men by daringly interviewing not just the convicted rapist Mukesh Singh but even some prominent lawyers from India.
It’s a fact that most Indian men in spite of being highly educated still do not know to respect and treat women with dignity. In fact, they believe that they are supreme-born human beings and have a birth right to indulge in almost anything, from abusing and raping a woman to aborting a girl-child. Otherwise, why does one see discussions about clothes and character of the rape victim after every rape case? That’s because it is historically seen that every woman is not only like a kitchen slave but like cheap ‘bazaari’ commodity under the guise of Indian culture. And this is even proved in Bollywood movies which so daringly go to sell or portray women as hot sex objects.
The government, instead of banning and harassing sensible foreign film-makers like Leslie Udwin on flimsy reasons should first try to clean the rotten and outdated mindset of our Indian men (especially those living in the interior villages) through proper education and then dream of making this country safer for women in the near future.
Scanty clothes can’t be an excuse to commit crimes against women. Cleaning the mindset of our men should be taken up on top priority basis by the central government on the lines of Swach Bharat campaign.
