Creating space for the other

A platform to showcase products and services by people with disability was launched recently

The Disability Rights Group (DRAG) has launched a business
platform over WhatsApp to help promote and sell products produced by people
with disabilities. This is an initiative that has certainly caught the
attention of people in the industry.

Avelino De Sa, president DRAG said around
35 people and 20 schools which had centres for people with disability, needed a
market. “We were getting opportunities from people like Marius Fernandes,
popularly known as Goencho Festakar, who requested us to put up stalls at the
fest. We also received an offer from Caculo Mall,” De Sa said.

To take advantage of these offers, DARG thought of forming this
group, a business platform. This would mean people with disabilities and ngos’
can be contacted of there are any requirements or any events where people with
disabilities could showcase their products or services

Since it was launched on Sunday, the immediate response has been
encouraging. He said they had received two enquiries and more were expected to
come in the days ahead.

“Mackinlay Barreto, founder of The Local Beat, a local
cultural experiences company that give a feel of Goa’s traditions, has
expressed his interest in the products for his company,” the DRAG
president said.

The platform provides for products as diverse as embroidery,
mugs t-shirts, key chains, serving trays, mobile holders, Kolhapuri chappals,
office stationery, restaurant, food items, paintings on stone, wall paintings,
cloth bags and services like carpentry, financial consultation, digital
marketing, printing and tailoring amongst others.

“The Caculo Mall has given us one Sunday in a month to sell
our products without charging a fee as part of their CSR initiative,” he
said. He hoped more people and corporates will support the efforts of people
with disability.
